Jardiance (generic name: empagliflozin) is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor.
Empagliflozin acts as a blocker for the SGLT2 protein in the kidney tubules, whose primary function is to reduce the amount of reabsorbed glucose and sodium in the blood. This ensures that glucose and salt are expelled through urine and not returned to the bloodstream.
As well as the effect on glucose, Jardiance reduces the heart’s workload and decreases the internal pressure inside the kidney’s filtering units.
The benefits include:
An improvement in glycemic control for adults with type 2 diabetes
A reduction in the risk of sustained kidney damage from high salt excretion
A reduction in the risks of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.
